The Majestic “Dragon Mountains” of South Africa ⛰️🌿
The Drakensberg, meaning “Dragon Mountains,” is one of South Africa’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Known by the Zulu people as the “Barrier of Spears,” this mountain range offers a sense of peace, tranquillity, and awe-inspiring beauty that draws travellers from around the world.
Stretching over 200 kilometres, the Drakensberg forms a natural border between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho. Towering peaks, rolling valleys, and dramatic cliffs create some of the most spectacular landscapes imaginable.
The Northern and Central Drakensberg are especially popular, offering diverse scenery across four main valleys:
Champagne Valley – Known for its lush surroundings and iconic mountain views
Cathedral Peak & Didima Valley – Home to the stunning Cathedral Peak Nature Reserve
Amphitheatre Valley – Featuring the famous Royal Natal National Park and the dramatic Amphitheatre cliffs
Middledale Pass Valley – A quieter, scenic area in the Northern Berg
The region is also divided into key areas including Bergville (Northern Berg), Winterton (Central Berg), Underberg (Southern Berg), and East Griqualand, each offering its own unique charm and experiences.Untitled design (5).png251.7 KBTop Attractions & Things to Do
