The little village of Clarens lies on the picturesque Eastern Free State, between the towering Rooiberge and the Maluti Mountains.

This quant village was founded in 1912 and named after the Swiss town of Clarens, where exiled Paul Kruger lived his last days. Located 15 minutes from the Golden Gate National Park, 3 hours from Johannesburg and Bloemfontein and 4 hours from Durban, it makes a great weekend or midweek getaway for family members from around South Africa.

Many well-known artists live in or frequent Clarens, and there are many art galleries scattered throughout the village square and town. The tranquil village ambience with a wide variety of restaurants and boutique shops creates a feeling of being transported to another world, one in which time moves a little slower and where you can breath a little easier.

Adventure seekers and nature lovers will find rock formations are commonplace, the countryside seems never-ending and dinosaurs fossils can be viewed by special tour. Activities include white water rafting, hot air ballooning, ziplining, mountain biking, trail running and an 18-hole golf course.
