Exploring Tofo: Activities to Enjoy

Tofo is a coastal paradise for divers and snorkelers, with its warm and clear waters, coral reefs, and marine life. With a wide range of diving reefs, including the well-known Manta Reef, visitors can experience the beauty of the ocean with diving schools that specialize in showing the best of the turquoise waters. Rare marine creatures, such as dugongs, whale sharks, and turtles, are just some of the species you can spot along with a vast number of game- and tropical fish species and a variety of beautiful corals.

Fishing is a popular activity in the Mozambique coastline, with Tofo at the heart of the action. From king mackerel (barracuda), dorado, wahoo, to various species of kingfish, bonito, and yellow-fin tuna, the pristine blue waters offer an ideal spot for offshore game fishing. Spear fishing license and permit are required for launching boats, and fish may not be sold for commercial purposes. Catch and release is encouraged to maintain the natural resources and environment.

Surfing is also a world-class activity in Tofo, with a mix of warm water, consistent swells, and sandy headlands. The sand point at Tofo’s beach point is ideal for beginners and long-boarders while Tofinho beach, less than a kilometer south of Tofo, is a popular spot for advanced riders.

For avid bird-watchers, Inhambane Province, with its great variety of habitats, is home to over 500 species of birds. The area around the Inhambane Bay, particularly the various mud flats and extensive mangrove swamps, is a bird-watcher’s paradise.

Curio shops offer an array of value-for-money curios sold at various roadside stalls, general dealers, and markets in Inhambane, Tofo, and its surrounding areas. From colourful cloths named capulanas, grass mats, batik prints, wood carvings, baskets, traditional ceramics, sculptures, to items carved from semi-precious stones, there is something for everyone to take home as a souvenir.

A visit to the Frelimo Monument to Fallen Heroes in Tofinho is a must-see, with its rich history and spectacular blow hole near the tip of the point that gives a raw display of power when there is a large swell running.

Other activities, such as dhow trips, parasailing, windsurfing, paddle-skiing, kayaking, and quad biking, are available in and around Tofo, as are escorted excursions into towns and rural settlements.
