Mtakatyi River Lodge

 

Set on a serene hillside overlooking the pristine Mtakatyi River, with panoramic ocean, river and forest views, Mtakatyi River Lodge provides comfortable and affordable Wild Coast holiday accommodation for families and fishermen 

There are 3 homes on the property

Front house with the best views is the 6 sleeper.

There’s a 4 sleeper cottage just behind it and the main house sleeps 6 plus adults and bunk room that sleeps 8 children

We have recently installed a wooden jungle gym off the main house.

The Lodge is situated a pleasant 1km walk, or drive, from the river banks. 

A new addition is our fully licenced Crayfish Processing Plant which supports local community development.

The Mtakatyi River mouth is only 4kms from our Private Launch Site, is accessible by foot, vehicle or boat, and has a wealth of birdlife and fish.

The Lodge is in the original Mtakatyi Trading Station 10 acre estate, and is securely guarded 24/7.

Located just 75km from Mthatha, Mtakatyi River Lodge offers a classic entertainment area with braai facility (BBQ) and panoramic views of the sea and pristine river valley,

TV lounge with flat-screen TV and Free Wifi is available.

We have installed significant solar power throughout the lodge to ensure we have no power outages

Mtakatyi River is one of the few untouched breeding estuaries and fishing hotspots along the Wild Coast of South Africa.

  • Open Plan Lounge / Dining / Kitchen with all amenities
  • 50sqm covered wooden deck entertainment area with braai, Great for sunrise coffees, afternoon snoozes, and braaing at sundowners. I.e. All day entertainment and relaxation.
  • There are two staff that come in daily, as well as additional staff available should you need assistance with baby-sitting, boat launching, fishing gillies, etc.
  • NEARBY ATTRACTIONS INCLUDE HLULEKA NATURE RESERVE, MDUMBI / COFFEE BAY / HOLE IN THE WALL ALL WITHIN AN HOUR DRIVE

Mtakatyi River is very well known for its variety of fish species in the Estuary and you are welcome to bring a fishing rod to try your luck! Well known species in the Mtakatyi River include King Fish (GT, big eye and yellow tail), Spotted Grunter, Kabeljou, Springer, Bull Shark, Skip Jack, Mullet, River Prawns, Mussels and Oysters in the Mtakatyi River Mouth! The local fishermen try their hand daily for a catch, they will often approach you to purchase some of their harvest. Prawns are very seasonal but, are a delicious meal to make at home. Oysters and Mussels are sold at the River Mouth and other areas. Please ensure that the produce you purchase from the fishermen is fresh  from the River or Ocean. The ocean is a governed resource, so permits (bait, fishing and collection) are needed. Theses permits are available at any Post Office. The cost of permits vary according to your preference of species. Please ensure you have an identification document available when going to apply.

Mtakatyi Community:

Mtakatyi is very remote and is located in the Transkei Homelands of the Xhosa Natives of Southern Africa.

The community in and around Mtakatyi generally speak Xhosa with a few who speak English or Afrikaans, you may ask one of our friendly staff to help you translate should you need some assistance.
