Situated within the Grietjie Game Reserve, a part of Balule in the Greater Kruger Park, you’ll find Modjadji Estate Lodge.
This exclusive adults-only retreat sits atop a hill, offering a mesmerizing view of the Olifant’s (Elephant) River and the majestic Drakensberg mountains.
The estate boasts a range of amenities, including a spa, pool area, Lapa, braai facilities, laundry services, and a beautifully designed entertainment section.
The accommodations are tastefully adorned and each comes with its own patio area.
Grietjie Private Nature Reserve is located in the northern section of the Balule Nature Reserve, just 30 km south of Phalaborwa in the Limpopo Province.
Spanning across approximately 2,800 hectares, the reserve features an impressive 6 km stretch of river frontage along the perennial Olifants River.
Following the removal of the Kruger National Park boundary fence, the area has witnessed an influx of wildlife, transforming Grietjie into one of the rare Big 5 reserves.
As a result, it has gained significant popularity among tourists.
Balule Nature Reserve, including Grietjie, falls within the boundaries of the Greater Kruger National Park and the UNESCO-designated Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve.
This expansive biosphere reserve holds the distinction of being the largest of its kind in the world.
Notably, Grietjie Game Reserve has recently been declared a Protected Area, further enhancing its status and commitment to preserving the natural environment.
About Us
A Journey of Transformation
In May of 1994, Gert & Jackie Harmse embarked on a remarkable journey by acquiring Grietjie 65. At that time, the land held no access to water or electricity, and there were only three modest stone structures with no glass windows in sight.
While Jackie was initially taken aback, her husband Gert envisioned the potential of this extraordinary location, blessed with breathtaking panoramic views that captivated their hearts.
Grietjie, with its 100 plots separated by fences and sparse wildlife, was a canvas waiting to be transformed. Enduring months without the basic comforts of water and electricity, the couple’s determination prevailed. They managed to bring a borehole to life, although its water supply proved limited. Electricity, provided by Eskom, finally graced their property in October 1994.
Over the years, Gert and Jackie poured their hearts and souls into the land, tirelessly building and renovating every year since that day in 1994.
Today, their hard work and dedication have turned Grietjie 65 into a thriving haven.
Our property relies on a borehole for water, so we kindly ask that you be mindful of conserving this precious resource by not leaving taps running unnecessarily.
Moreover, we’ve installed an emergency generator to ensure uninterrupted power in case of Eskom outages. Rest assured, it takes just a few seconds for the generator to kick in and keep you comfortable.

Draken - Zicht Sleeps 4 Adults
The Draken-Zicht room, a delightful self-catering cottage featuring an open-plan lounge and kitchen area, complete with a flat-screen TV, a comprehensive DSTV package, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The well-equipped kitchen ensures convenience with all the necessary appliances at your disposal. Your comfort is our priority, with provided bed linens, fresh towels, and daily cleaning service.
This charming cottage comprises two beautifully appointed bedrooms, the main room has a king sized bed and the second room has a queen sized bed, sharing a well-appointed bathroom featuring a shower, toilet, and basin. The bedrooms are thoughtfully adorned with luxurious Percale Linen, queen-sized beds, and complementary guest amenities. Step onto the terrace, where you’ll find an outdoor gas braai for your culinary enjoyment.
For your added convenience, we offer swimming towels and extra bed linens as needed.

Conveniently located 67.6 km away, the Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit is the nearest airport to our accommodation.

Our complimentary daily cleaning service operates from 08:00 AM to 18:00 PM. Feel free to sleep in; just ensure the doors are closed, and our staff will respect your privacy. Please deposit used towels in the laundry hamper. Laundry and ironing services are available upon request for an additional fee, so don’t hesitate to inquire with our staff.
Cell phone reception is generally strong on our property.
Copying and faxing services are accessible for an extra charge.
During the summer, we occasionally experience severe thunderstorms. It’s advisable to unplug all mobile devices and laptops during such weather events.

Cancellation Policy
To secure your reservation, a 50% deposit is required at the time of booking.
The full payment for your reservation must be settled before your stay.
If you do not make your payment through the website, Modjadji will send you a booking confirmation with payment instructions.
Upon receiving proof of payment, guests will promptly receive a confirmation email.
If you have specific dietary requirements for meal plans, please inform us in advance.
Please be aware that the lodge cannot refund or transfer unused bed nights in cases of cancellation due to flight or airport delays, illness, or any unforeseen circumstances.
For individual bookings canceled more than 42 days before the scheduled arrival date, Modjadji Estate reserves the right to charge a cancellation fee equivalent to any direct costs incurred, plus a 10% administration fee.
If a guest pays a deposit through a Booking Agent and subsequently cancels, Modjadji Estate reserves the right to charge a cancellation fee of 15% at any time.
In case of cancellation between 30 and 42 days prior to the scheduled arrival date, a cancellation fee equivalent to 25% of the total account will be imposed.
Cancellation within 30 days of the scheduled arrival date will result in a 100% cancellation fee, equal to the full account.
Please note that Modjadji will not be responsible for any bank fees or exchange rate commissions associated with reservation cancellations at any time.
