Activities

Giants Castle Slack Packing trail

Explore the Drakensberg foothills without the burden of a backpack walking from lodge to lodge, having your luggage transported for you and looking forward to excellent 3 course meals. The Drakensberg Slack packing trail is a luxury hike offering comfortable and varied accommodation experiences each night, luggage transfers and delectable catering.

 Drakensberg Slack Packing Trail

The Drakensberg slack packing hiking trail includes some of the most scenic and bio diverse parts of KwaZulu Natal. This hiking trail provides access to private land, a game reserve and locally forged conservancies. Special places where people normally would not have access. All you need to do is organise a group of friends or join one of our prearranged trips, and look forward to a gentle stroll carrying nothing more than a packed picnic, some binoculars and a good birding book.

This is a three day round hike encompassing curated paths through the Zulu Waters Private Game Reserve and the Lowlands Conservancy. Well known for its rich biodiversity, the daily hikes are gentle in distance and gradient making this hike a perfect beginner’s hike for families and for those less experienced and fit. The lodges offer locally grown, home cooked meals as an added bonus.

In the summer, there are rivers and dams to swim in and plenty of picturesque picnic spots on route.

More Information

Fishing

Right here on the farm there are some great bass fishing opportunities. And then the area is renowned for the superb fly fishing opportunities for rainbow and brown trout.

Butterfly Tours

Like the beautiful and serene butterfly, our butterfly tour seeks to introduce visitors to the lush and peaceful Midlands countryside and Drakensberg foothills. Our tours are led by a local guide who is keen to share his extensive knowledge about local rarities like the Midlands Widow, Estcourt Blue, The King Blue and the Mooi River Opal which are endemic and only found within a few km radius. We also talk about our local communities, its people, and traditions. Visitors will have the opportunity to encounter and experience farm life at a comfortable pace, away from the usual tourist hotspots.

Mountain Biking

Bring your own mountain bike and explore the farm and area. Lots of single track trails available.

Long range gong shooting range

Leopard’s Lair is one of the few (if not the only!) private establishment to offer a long range gong shooting range, directly from our Lapa. Gongs start at 450m, then 550m, 650m, 750m, 1000m and a whopping 1200m! Bring your long range rifles and put your skills to the test!

Please note that certain booking terms and conditions apply for the exclusive use of the range.

Agri-Tourism

Leopards Lair is situated on a working farm. This is a perfect location to experience agri tourism where your kids can roam free in a safe environment. Try their hand at bass fishing, canoeing on the dam and checking out our menagerie of farm animals. Nothing like collecting eggs or picking fresh vegetables from our organic garden.
