The Significance of the Buffalo Thorn Tree
Buffalo Thorn Lodge takes its name from the Buffalo Thorn tree, Ziziphus mucronata, also known in Afrikaans as the Blinkblaar Wag-'n-Bietjie.Known for its distinctive shiny leaves and hooked thorns, the Buffalo Thorn has an important place in the traditions and cultures of Southern Africa. The tree is surrounded by fascinating stories and cultural significance, including traditional uses of its fruit and leaves. In some cultures, the tree is associated with protection, while its thorns have traditionally held symbolic importance. The name perfectly reflects the character of the lodge — deeply connected to the African landscape and the natural environment surrounding it.

Buffalo Thorn Lodge features five spacious stand-alone luxury suites, each approximately 70 square metres. Every suite includes a private lounge and viewing deck, king-size or twin beds, en-suite bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers, a jet spa bath, air-conditioning, minibar fridge, tea and coffee facilities, hairdryer, safe and comfortable outdoor loungers. Two family units also feature a loft with two additional single beds for children.

Exclusive daily game drives are included in your stay, with two drives per night — a morning drive and an afternoon drive. Start the morning with a coffee and rusk stop, then head into the bush to discover the incredible wildlife of the reserve. The Black Rhino Reserve forms part of Pilanesberg National Park, offering diverse landscapes and an abundance of wildlife. Guests can explore the reserve in open safari vehicles and experience the possibility of seeing elephants, rhinos, lions, cheetahs, buffalo and many other African species.
