Nestled at the foot of the majestic Erongo Mountains, Ameib Guesthouse & Camping is a tranquil oasis in the heart of Namibia's natural beauty.

This family-run guesthouse offers a unique blend of comfort, adventure, and relaxation, making it the perfect stop-over for travelers exploring the region.

 

Our Story

Ameib, meaning "The Green Place", has a rich history dating back to 1864 when a missionary station was founded here by the Rheinische Mission.

Today, our guesthouse is a beloved holiday destination and nature paradise, surrounded by breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife.

 

Amenities

  • Swimming Pool: Relax by our bio-filter swimming pool, perfect for hot days. Guests in the cabins at the camping site can use the swimming pool at the camping site.
  • Restaurant: Enjoy breakfast and dinner at our restaurant, with lunch and afternoon coffee/tea available on request. Bar service is paid separately.
  • Bar: Savor a cold beer or drink at our bar, with payment required separately.
  • Walking Trails: Explore our self-guided walking trails, leading to attractions like Phillip's Cave and Bull's Party.

 

Accommodation

En-suite Bungalows / Rooms : 

Ameib Guesthouse at the moment offers 6 en-suite double-rooms / bungalows  of which 3 can be converted to family units sleeping maximum 4 persons on request.

All the rooms have a verandah, either facing the lush garden or the looking onto the magnificent mountain surroundings.

 

Ameib also has 2 cabins, which are situated in the Ameib Nature Camp, close to the guesthouse. 

The cabins are double/twin bed (can be re-arranged to a family unit on request) and have an en-suite bathroom. Situated in front of the cabins is a barbeque facility, which is perfect if you like camping, just without the tents.

Please note: the cabins are not self-catering/ no fridge, meaning you have to bring your own cutlery, etc.

Ameib features a camping site near the guesthouse, referred to as the Nature Camp. This area is securely fenced to protect against wild animals, and the abundance of large trees provides ample shade.

Camping Facilities

Numerous sites available, each with:

  • Concrete bases for tents
  • Barbecue facilities
  • Some sites include picnic areas
  • A swimming pool with a bio-filter is located directly at the camping site

Ablution block includes:

  • Hot showers
  • Toilets
  • Dishwashing sinks
  • Power points
  • Another power point can be found in the center of the Nature Camp
  • Bundles of wood are available for purchase at the reception

Note: Ameib does not offer camping gear for rent.

 

Exclusive Leadwood Campsites

Additionally, there are two exclusive campsites near the guesthouse operated by Lewo Safaris - the “Leadwood” Campsites. These include:

Leadwood Umbretta Camp

  • Set among gigantic rock boulders under large Ana and Acacia trees
  • Accommodates a maximum of two vehicles and up to eight people

 

Leadwood Explorer Camp

  • Located along a massive granite wall
  • More spacious, allowing for up to four vehicles

These campsites are approximately 3 km from Ameib Guesthouse & Camping and are only accessible by 4x4 vehicles (camping trailers are not permitted at Umbretta).

 

Activities

 

Phillip's Cave:

Discover the famous 'White Elephant' rock painting and other ancient art. The cave is a 40-minute walk from the parking area or a 1-hour walk from the guesthouse.

Bull's Party and Elephant's Head: 

Explore the unique rock formations and enjoy breathtaking views. This attraction can be reached by car or on foot, with a shorter walking trail starting from the vehicle track.

Bird Watching: 

Spot endemic species like the Hartlaub Francolin and White-Tailed Shrike. Our dam near the guesthouse is a bird-watcher's paradise, with a variety of water birds and other species.

Scenic Drives: 

Join our guided sunrise or sunset drives through the Erongo Mountains, operated by Lewo Safaris.

Conservation Efforts

  • Ameib Scientific Station: Support our research and conservation efforts, learning about the unique ecosystems of Namibia. The station conducts research on all interactions in the natural world and the anthropogenic effect on the arid and semi-arid natural environment of Namibia.
  • Erongo Mountain Nature Sanctuary: Join our efforts to protect rare and endangered wildlife, including the reintroduction of black rhinos and black-faced impalas. The sanctuary aims to preserve wildlife in their natural habitat and allow for natural movement of wildlife by removing inner fences.

 

Getting Here

Directions: Follow the D1935 from Usakos, turning off onto D1937 to reach Ameib Guesthouse & Camping.
Distance: 27 km (40 minutes) from Usakos on gravel road.
